Abstract
In this seminar, I will describe the principles and instrumentation development of a novel, high performance inexpensive near-infrared multispectral imaging (NIR-MSI) microscope which was developed recently in our laboratory. This NIR-MSI microscope is based on an acousto-optic tunable filter for spectrally scanning and either an InSb or a HgCdTe focal plane arrays infrared camera for NIR images recording. The high sensitivity (single pixel resolution) and high spatial resolution (~0.9 um/pixel) of the NIR-MSI microscope, coupled with its ability to measure images and spectra directly and simultaneously, makes it possible for us to use, for the first time, for measurements which are not possible with existing instruments/techniques. These include in situ monitoring of the size, morphology, spectroscopic properties and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of individual hydrogel particles, the localized surface plasmon resonance of individual gold nanoshell and gold nanocage particles, and the noninvasive detection and identification of melanoma and other type of skin cancers.
Biosketch
Chieu D. Tran received his B.S. degree from Kumamoto University in Japan and his Ph. D. from Texas A & M University. He joined Brookhaven National Laboratory as a Staff Scientist in 1982 after spending two years doing post- doctoral research at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. He joined the faculty at Marquette University in 1986, and currently is the Pfletschinger-Habermann Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. He has received numerous awards including the 2005 Lawrence G. Haggerty Award for Research Excellence, the 2004 American Chemical Society (ACS), Milwaukee Section Award, the Senior Invitation Fellowship given by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS), the 2002 Sigma Xi Award for Distinguished Scientific Research Achievement, the 1999 Gold Medal Award given by the New York Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS), the Shannon Award given by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the 1992 Perkin-Elmer International Liquid Chromatography Technical Paper Award. He has been on Editorial Advisory Boards of several journals including Analytical Letters, Applied Spectroscopy Reviews, Microchemical Journal and Talanta.
